Call for Virtual Fellowship - The SOAS Centre for Pan-African Studies

Call for Virtual Fellowship

The SOAS Centre for Pan-African Studies

The SOAS Centre for Pan-African Studies is delighted to announce two one-year virtual fellowships for postgraduate students and early career researchers based in institutions in Africa.

This programme is linked to SOAS ‘Pan-African frontiers and identities: the remaking of Africa in the world’ project. The project explores pan-Africanism as a system of ideas for collective action, examining how it becomes animated and its significance in the African policy arena, popular politics, and diaspora identities. We welcome applications from researchers whose work prominently features a pan-African approach, broadly defined as methods that amplify African agency and underscore the importance of solidarity and collaborative pathways to address common African challenges. We particularly encourage contributions that address continental and regional issues, as well as national issues that hold significance for regions, the continent, or African diasporans.

The fellowship includes the following benefits:

- Research mentoring conducted remotely via online platforms.

- Access to SOAS online library resources.

- Opportunities to participate in collaborative research with academics affiliated with the Centre, with the aim of publishing or co-publishing specific research articles and policy papers and establishing long-term collaborations.

- Financial support for project-related expenses (up to £1000), intended to facilitate fieldwork or writing projects.

Fellow contribution

Successful applicants will be expected to:

- produce substantive outputs, which may include publishing or co-authoring publications with members affiliated with the Centre and/or preparing grant applications and contributing to the Centre's Policy Brief series and/or blog series.

- engage in the research activities of the Centre, which may involve giving talks in seminar series and workshops, as well as contributing to the Centre's network of partners, (academic, practitioner, and policymaking connections).

Application

As part of your application, you need to submit the following:

- A statement outlining your specific objectives, including a clear description of the research project you are undertaking and how it aligns with the pan-African research focus of the Centre. Please indicate the type of publications you plan to produce for this research and explain how this will contribute to Centre activities. Keep this statement within two double-spaced pages.

- Your current CV.

- One letter of recommendation.

All material must be submitted electronically to cpas@soas.ac.uk with the email subject reference as – CPAS Fellowship 2024.
